Updated Masking Guidance in Virginia

Last week, Governor Ralph Northam lifted Virginia’s universal indoor masking mandate to align with new guidance from the CDC, which says that fully vaccinated people can resume activities without wearing a mask or physically distancing, whether indoors or outdoors. This guidance does not apply inside a healthcare setting.

  • Inova continues to require masking and social distancing for patients, visitors and team members at all healthcare settings.
  • Inova sites that are strictly non-clinical (e.g., Cambridge Court, Building D at ICPH):
    • Vaccinated team members can perform their own risk assessment to determine if they should wear a mask.
    • Unvaccinated team members must continue masking at these locations.

The governor also announced that Virginia will ease distancing and capacity restrictions on Friday, May 28, two weeks earlier than planned.

iMED Electronic Informed Consent Deadline Approaching: June 1

Providers are expected to utilize iMED Electronic Informed Consent as the primary tool for documenting informed consent discussions with patients. Electronic consent with e-Sign is available across the Inova Health System, including all five hospitals, the Schar Cancer Institute, Physician Enterprise locations and affiliated care sites. As of June 1, consents will be processed solely through iMED.

Consents completed in iMED are available in Epic in a new, dedicated tab: Chart Review: Consents. Retrieving the consent and using e-Sign is fairly straightforward. All reference materials (tip sheets, roadmap, videos, FAQs) are available on our InovaNet webpage http://inovanet.net.inova.org/iMed.* This information is also available in Epic.

To further support this effort, we have implemented new feature functionality as follows:
  • New Mobile signature – now live - feature to allow for remote signature capture via email or mobile phones via text by provider and patient. (see tipsheet)
  • New Deferred Consentlive on May 21 - Please use this feature if you are deferring a consent to another encounter. If you are not deferring consent, DO NOT click on 'Deferred Encounter.'  Choose your hospital name/CSN encounter number, click ‘Keep Active’ and proceed with the consent. See the screenshot below:

Feel free to contact any one of us if you should have additional questions.

Drive to Excellence: American College of Surgeons System Quality Verification Program

Inova is the first health system in the nation to participate in the American College of Surgeons (ACS) System Quality Verification Program (SQV). Currently in pilot phase, this new program verifies a health system’s comprehensive and detailed approach to surgical quality and safety across all care sites, disciplines and the continuum of care. For nearly 100 years, the American College of Surgeons has led national and international initiatives to improve quality in hospitals, as well as in the more specific fields of trauma, cancer and surgical care. These initiatives have measurably improved surgical quality, and have prevented complications, reduced costs and saved lives.

"At Inova, we are proud to be nationally recognized for our continued commitment to clinical excellence and patient safety," said John Moynihan, MD, FACS, President, Inova Surgery Service Line. "To be the first health system in the U.S. to successfully participate in the ACS SQV fortifies our commitment to our patients, our team members and our mission to provide world-class healthcare. Participating in the ACS SQV further helps us to unify the delivery of surgical care and consistently achieve the best outcomes."

Phase 2:  Safe@Inova Campaign – Get Back to Routine Care

This week, Inova Health System announced the launch of the second phase of its Safe@Inova campaign, which encourages patients to not delay seeking medical care and raises awareness about the importance of keeping up with routine healthcare needs and screenings. During the pandemic, Inova saw a significant decline in patients for both emergency and routine medical care. As a result of delayed emergency care and postponement of routine screenings, Inova began to see higher acuity cases across all care sites. The campaign empowers patients and members of the community to access the care they need right now in a safe and reliable environment.

Inova in the News

During Nurses Week, ABC 7 talked to three incredible Inova nurses about what it means to them to be a nurse. WJLA’s health reporter Victoria Sanchez also joined us at the Stonebridge Vaccination Center to see some of the first 12-15 year olds get their vaccine.
