VIDEO | J. Stephen Jones, MD, President and CEO: Our Guard Remains Up

In this week’s video, Dr. Jones once again commends all Inova team members for their strength and resilience during the challenges of the pandemic. He assures us that while the severity of COVID-19 cases is decreasing, our guard remains up and we are prepared for whatever the fall and winter may bring.

AMBULATORY REMINDER: Outpatient COVID-19 Testing with Nasal Swabs

    • After careful analysis and input from subject matter experts, Inova’s ambulatory/outpatient locations have transitioned from using nasopharyngeal (NP) swabs to nasal swabs for COVID-19 PCR testing to improve our patients’ experience with COVID-19 testing.
    • Inova’s Testing Steering Committee and Clinical Enterprise Triad approved this patient-centered approach because nasal swabs cause much less discomfort than NP swabs and may help alleviate patient fears that lead to test avoidance.
    • While nasal swabs are less sensitive in detecting COVID-19, their use is associated with only a one percent or less increase in false negatives per 1,000 patients tested.
    • As with any test, patients should be counseled about false-negative tests regardless of the collection method. Additionally, symptomatic patients should be reminded to self-isolate until the test results are returned, and to always wear a face mask, maintain a social distance and practice good hand hygiene in public.
    • Note – the nasal swab change does not affect patient testing in our hospital settings.
CDC "Close Contact" Definition

  • The CDC expanded its definition of “close contact” as someone who was within six feet of an infected person for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more, over a 24-hour period.
  • The CDC had previously defined a close contact as someone who spent at least 15 consecutive minutes with an individual infected with COVID-19.
  • The updated guidance underscores the importance of universal masking, appropriate PPE (including eye protection) and hand hygiene.
  • The other criteria for healthcare worker exposure remain the same.
Countdown to Flu – Oct. 30

If you haven’t already received your flu shot, don’t delay – we need 100 percent of our team members and medical staff to be vaccinated by Friday, Oct. 30. A variety of options remain to get your shot.

Medical staff who do not submit documentation of vaccination or approved exemption by Oct. 30, will face administrative suspension of access to the following until compliant:
  • Inova ID badge (i.e., building access)
  • Epic access (i.e., unable to admit, write orders, etc.)
  • Scheduling of new cases
  • On-call access

SEE YOUR OPTIONS AND DOCUMENTATION INSTRUCTIONS >>

As of today, 84 percent of our employed team members and Inova-employed medical staff have been vaccinated and 80 percent of our independent medical staff have been vaccinated.

Well-Being Resources for Team Members

Wellness Tip of the Day – Start each day with a five-minute wellness check-in. Pause and take a moment to check in with each other. This helps remind us that we bring our whole selves to provide the best care we can and we are all in this together. Ask yourself and others a couple of these questions:

  • What are the most important things on your mind today?
  • What word describes how you are feeling right now?
  • What is going well (or what are you hopeful about)?
  • What is one positive thing happening right now, big or small?
  • What and who are you grateful for today?
  • What gives you strength? Hope?
  • What is your why for being at work today?

Submit your wellness tips to MediaRelations@inova.org and use the Subject: My Wellness Tip.

Team Member Well-Being Resources – Inova cares about the well-being of all our team members. As a reminder, the Team Member Well-Being resource is frequently updated with videos, articles and activities to help you and yours manage stress, anxiety and communication.
